Poker is utterly unique among casino games because you are not playing against the house; you are playing against the other players sitting at the table.

Collusion: The Invisible Team Sport

The absolute most pervasive and difficult-to-prove form of cheating in modern poker is called "Collusion."

For example, stacking chips in a specific pattern, placing a drink on the left side of the cup holder, or scratching their nose can secretly broadcast "I hold an Ace."

The colluders are simply inflating the pot using the combined strength of their hands, knowing they will split the stolen profits in the parking lot later.

If they constantly check down the river against each other but play hyper-aggressively against everyone else, they are almost certainly a team.

If you suspect collusion, do not confront the players directly at the table, as this usually causes a massive, dangerous argument.

The Classic Cheat: Marking the Deck

A player who marks cards is attempting to create tiny, subtle physical defects on the back of the high-value cards (Aces and Kings).

The most common method is using a sharp fingernail to put a microscopic dent (a "nail nick") into the edge of an Ace.

In modern, heavily regulated casinos, marking cards is incredibly difficult because dealers are trained to watch for it, and the decks are replaced frequently.

If you notice an asymmetrical smudge, a tiny scratch, or a bent corner on several high cards, instantly demand a "deck change" from the dealer.

In a casino, you have the absolute right to request a fresh deck of cards if you suspect the current deck is compromised.

Angle Shooting: The Unethical Grey Area

An "angle shooter" uses intentionally deceptive, unethical behavior to trick opponents or exploit loopholes in the strict rules of casino poker.

A classic angle shoot is the "pump fake" bet. A player grabs a massive stack of chips and aggressively thrusts their arm forward as if to bet, but stops just short of the betting line.

If the opponent flips their winning hand over, the angle shooter will claim, "I never said call, I said fold!" and try to pull their chips back.

An opponent might push all-in thinking they are calling a $100 bet, only to realize the angle shooter had a hidden $500 chip in the back.

Never flip your cards over until the dealer instructs you to do so, and always place your chips in neat, easily readable stacks.

If you stick to heavily regulated, corporate casinos, you are largely protected from overt cheating by the massive surveillance networks.

The smartest poker players in the world know that the most profitable move you can make against a cheater is simply refusing to play their game.
